The history of the School of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Science and Technology Beijing can be traced back to the "Department of Iron and Steel Machinery" in the early days of Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology(BIIST) in 1952. After nearly seventy years of hard work, generations of teachers and students have been endeavoring to advance in the vibrant and promising land of Manjing Village. The School of Mechanical Engineering develops the first arc continuous casting machine in the world, the earliest heavy industrial manipulators, the earliest hot tandem rolling computer control system as well as the earliest part rolling technology in China. A group of national pillars and outstanding talents graduate from here, including academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the commander-in-chief of the Chinese deep-sea manned submersible "Jiaolong", the commander-in-chief of the Mars probe "Tianwen-1", experts of China Manned Space Engineering, political elites, business leaders.
As the school has developed for 68 years, it now has 6 undergraduate programs, 3 graduate disciplines and engineering Master-degree Programs. And the School consists of 7 departments , 4 research institutes,and 4 national and provincial level major labs and engineering centers . Disciplines cover engineering, management and art. Over 400 undergraduates and 300 graduates students enroll in the school annually. It is a distinctive feature of the school to cultivate compound talents of both engineering and art knowledge.
The school has high-level faculties including the academics of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the winners of China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, researchers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences “ One-hundred talent program” and members of the global IEEE RAS Management Committee, and the prestigious national teaching team. The school has more than 170 faculty members, including 120 full-time teachers, over 40 professors, and more than 70 associate professors. Over 68 years, the college has trained more than 15,000 undergraduate students, over 3,000 master students and more than 400 doctoral students.
The school seizes the opportunity of Double First-class construction, actively serves the Belt and Road initiative, enhances international competitiveness and visibility. With a global vision and the belief in the mission of national strength, the school closely links its own progress with China's economic and social development. The school has now established student exchanges, teacher visits, and cooperative researching relationships with dozens of well-known universities, research institutes and large-scale industries in foreign countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, inviting foreign academicians, presidents of top international academic societies and other overseas experts to give lectures. Every year, more than 100 students go abroad to study or participate in academic activities in well-known universities, and nearly half of them further their studies in top universities and research institutes abroad, such as Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, Imperial College London, Aachen University of Technology in Germany, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
The school actively meets major national strategic needs such as Made in China 2025 and Coordinated Development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. And it undertakes a number of national scientific research projects such as National Science and Technology Major Project, National Key R&D Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China Major Project and Key Program, International Cooperative Key Program involving plenty of emerging fields such as intelligent manufacturing, robotics, aerospace equipment, and new energy vehicles. The school has won more than 100 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress and Second Prize of National Natural Science. In the past five years, more than 200 national invention patents have been authorized, and more than 300 high-level academic papers have been published in top international journals such as PNAS, IJP, MSSP and EEEASME. Among them, the precise rolling theory and technology of parts are at the leading edge in the world, the high-power AC drive technology of engineering vehicles breaks the foreign technology blockade and the host-designed torch Trend for the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games is praised by national leaders.
