Functional materials are a large class of new materials with special electrical, magnetic, optical, acoustic, thermal, mechanical, chemical and biological functions. They are crucial and fundamental materials for high-tech fields such as information technology, biotechnology, energy technology, and national defense construction. This course pulls-in from the introduction of fundamentals of crystallography and materials performance. Then it introduces various typical functional materials on their research progress, structure, performance and application, such as polymer materials, superconducting materials, hydrogen storage alloy, shape memory alloy, magnetic materials, semiconductor materials, ceramic materials, nano materials, functional conversion material and some innovative functional materials. This course aims to provide a wide knowledge of the status and characteristics of functional materials. It also offers basic principles, material types and applications of typical functional materials for the students. The students are required to obtain the ability of choosing proper functional materials to solve scientific and engineering problems after this course.
