Prof. Sun’s research expertise is in materials processing, multiscale materials and process modeling, which includes crystal plasticity modeling, discrete dislocation dynamics modeling and MPF-FE modeling and its application in microstructure evolution of magnesium alloys, TWIP steel and Nickel-base super-alloy during metal forming process. He seeks an epistemological understanding of the science behind materials processing and micro-mechanics, advancing knowledge in these areas, and further successfully addressing a plethora of challenges and bottleneck issues in the exploration arena.

He has completed projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Specialized Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education, National key laboratory, and cooperated with companies through many projects. She is also the key member of other nearly 30 research projects. He has published more than 80 journal papers.

He lectured on undergraduate courses " Nonlinear Finite Element Methods ", "Finite element method and its application ".
