Established in 1997, the Department of Mechanical Engineering was composed of three former Teaching and Research Sections, named the Sections of Mechanical Principles, Mechanical Design and Engineering Graphics respectively. The School of Mechanical Engineering has developed into a high-level teaching and research base, an important development organization of "Mechanical Design and Theory" (a national key discipline), and a cradle of cultivating high-level talents. The Department of Mechanical Engineering involves the fields of Computer Mechanics, Mechanical Transmission and Control, Mechanical Design Expert System, Intelligent CAD, Computer Graphics, MEMS Design Simulation, Modern Engineering Graphics, Computer Graphics Simulation, Robust Design, Reliability and Quality Control of Mechanical and Electrical Products, Bionic Mechanics, Nano-tribology, the Theory and Methods of Modern Mechanical Design, etc.

Established in 1972, the Department of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation was formed by the Teaching and Research Sections of Machinery Manufacturing and the Sections of Metallurgical Technology. After more than 40 years of construction and development, the Department has developed into a high-level research and teaching base with wide range of research fields. The research fields mainly cover Digital Manufacturing, Precision Processing, Special Processing, Precision Measurement, Equipment Automation, CAD/CAM, Reverse Engineering, the Reliability of Manufacturing Equipment and so on.

The Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering was established in 1996. It was composed of the former Teaching and Research Section of Hydraulic Transmission and Control, the Testing and Research Section and the Teaching and Research Section of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering. After nearly 20 years of construction and development, the Department has formed a number of distinctive, relatively stable high-level research direction and academic echelon. Research areas include Equipment Fault Diagnosis and Production Quality Management, Simulation for Electromechanical System and Intelligent Control, Monitoring and Control of Electromechanical System, Industrial Robots and Production Automation, Information Mechanics and MEMS science, Hydraulic Transmission and Control and so on.

The predecessor of the Department of Mechanical Equipment and Control Engineering (Metallurgical Machinery Research Institute) was the Teaching and Research Section of Metallurgical Machinery. It was established in 1952 when our university was nearly set up. The "Mechanical Design and Theory" of this Department has been rewarded as the national key discipline. The Department has been built into the plate and strip research center of the national advanced equipment engineering and technology, the main support and construction units of Beijing Key Laboratory of forming and manufacturing lightweight metal. It is one of the longest and most influential teaching, scientific research and personnel training institutions which is specialized in the quality inspection and control of the design, manufacture, monitoring and control of metallurgical products domestically. It has won the titles of "Advanced Group of Science and Technology", national "Advanced Grass-roots Party Organizations", and "Model Group", "Advanced Grass-roots Party Organizations" and "Ten Red Flag of Advanced Party Organizations" in Beijing. The scientific research and discipline construction of our Department has its own traditional advantages and characteristics in metallurgical equipment and strip rolling. The Department is a national advanced research unit in the fields of the Dynamics of Elastic System, Theoretical application of Fracture Mechanics, Mechanical Model of Metal Working, Biomechanics of Bone and its Applications. It has come up to the international advanced level in the research of mechanical behavior of plate and strip mill, shape control and inspection, steel controlled cooling strengthening and toughening and on-line monitoring of equipment, and has come up to the domestic advanced level in the research of converter steelmaking equipment, blast furnace casthouse equipment and steel rolling equipment. In recent years, the scientific research of our Department has expanded into the fields of Aeronautics, Astronautics and Military Equipment, and some academic frontier domains, such as Advanced Plastic Forming Manufacturing, Biomechanics, Nano-tribology, Interface (Surface) Mechanics, Navigation and Positioning Guidance, Nonlinear Dynamics, Extreme Detection Technology and so on. We have made continuous innovations in the fields mentioned above.

The predecessor of the Department of Vehicle Engineering was the Mining Machinery Teaching and Research Section, which was founded in 1959. In 1998, the disciplines and majors of the Ministry of Education were adjusted, and the discipline of "Mining Machinery Engineering" in our university was transferred to the discipline of "Vehicle Engineering". In 2001, the Teaching and Research Section of Mining Machinery and the Equipment Engineering Office of the Mining Research Institute merged into the Equipment Engineering Department. In 2010, the discipline structure of the university was adjusted, and the Department of Equipment Engineering was renamed as the Department of Vehicle Engineering. In 1981, it started to have the right to grant a master's degree, and in 1990 it had the right to grant a doctor's degree. In 1999, it was approved to set up a post-doctoral mobile station for the first-class discipline of Mechanical Engineering, and in 2002 it was approved to be a key discipline in Beijing. Main academic echelons and research directions: Integrated Design Theory and Technology of Engineering Vehicles, New Transmission/Drive System and Control of Vehicles, Control and Monitoring of Vehicle Operation Behavior, etc.

In 1985, the "Teaching and Research Section of Logistics Engineering" was established on the basis of the "Crane Research Section" of the former Mechanical Department. In 1992, the first domestic "Logistics Research Institute", which is specialized in logistics engineering and technology was set up, and in 2004, the "Logistics Engineering Department" has been established, which was one of the earliest institutions engaged in personnel training, teaching and scientific research in the field of logistics engineering in China. It is now responsible for the teaching and personnel training of two undergraduate and two graduate majors in logistics engineering and industrial engineering. Its research areas include Modeling and Simulation of Logistics System, Logistics Information System, Logistics System Planning and so on. The Department has different laboratories for different use, such as for AS/RS automated storage, logistics and industrial engineering comprehensive experimental training, logistics system simulation, logistics information acquisition and tracking and human engineering .

The School of Mechanical Engineering of USTB enrolled its first session of undergraduates of Industrial Design in 2000 and formally established the Department of Industrial Design in 2002. It began to recruit undergraduates of Art Design in 2004 (renamed as "Visual Communication Design" in 2013), and established the master's degree of Artistic Design in the same year. The Department has formed three main research directions: Interactive Design and Information Art & Design, Industrial Design, Visual Communication and Media Design. It mainly conducts the research on Basic Design Theory, New Product Development, Intelligent Products and Smart Home, Interactive design, Information Art & Design, Digital Image and Digital Media, Cultural Heritage and Creative Industries and so on. There are four research platforms, including product model design and production platform, ergonomics and cognitive psychology platform, digital image platform and interaction and media platform. We established a joint laboratory with UFIDA, which provides basic conditions for teaching and scientific research.

In 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of the "Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education for Advanced Plate and Strip Production Equipment and Control" relying on our School. On this basis, in 2009, the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the construction of the "National Engineering and Technological Research Center for Advanced Plate and Strip Production Equipment" relying on USTB. According to the requirements of national construction, our university established a special institution in July 2009 to take the construction tasks into practice. During the construction period, the Center has been closely linked with the School of Mechanical Engineering to implement the joint construction. From the beginning of its establishment, the Center focused on strengthening the organization and personnel team building. In June 2010, the Center established an engineering and technical committee headed by Academician Zhong Jue, and the committee includes four academicians. The Center has more than 20 experts and academic leaders in the level of senior professional and technical positions. Facing the long-term development of the industry and discipline, the Center has formulated the research and technology development direction with "green production process, accurate product quality and reliable operation of equipment" as the core. At present, the key research directions and fields include: New Process and New Technology of Plate and Strip Production; Quality Control and Informationization of Strip Production; Energy-saving and Environmental Protection Technology and Equipment for Plate and Strip Production, etc.

The Parts Near-net Rolling of Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education of USTB, which is also an Technology Extension Center of Effective Parts Rolling Technology approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education in 1991, is mainly engaged in the research, development and promotion of axis parts rolling (cross wedge rolling and skew rolling), headed by Professor Hu Zhenghuan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of China Plastic Processing Association. The Center has made a great number of internationally and domestically advanced scientific research achievements in the field of parts rolling, popularized more than 200 parts rolling production lines in more than 20 provinces and cities in China, with more than 500 different kinds of parts been developed and put into production, and achieved remarkable economic benefits. The Center has won 5 national awards including National Invention and National Scientific and Technological progress. In 1990, it was listed as one of the first batch of "Popularization Projects of National Key Achievement of Science and Technology" by the State Science and Technology Commission, and in 1995, it was rewarded as one of "Ten Typical Popularization Projects in China" by the State Science and Technology Commission. In 2007, it was listed as "Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education for Near-net Rolling of Parts" by the Ministry of Education, and in 2008, it has been approved as the China Torch Program by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

In 2006, the Engineering Technology Center of Advanced Plate and Strip Production Equipment of USTB was approved by the Ministry of Education [Educational Technology Letter (2006) 30]. The Center regards the production technology and equipment of plate and strip which are the highest technical content and the largest proportion in the metallurgical industry as the research objects, carries out the research and development and engineering application of the key common technologies. The Center has closely grasped the national policies and technical requirements of the industry, and its main research fields and directions are as follows: Key Technologies and Equipment for Energy-saving and Consumption-reducing in Strip Production, Core Technologies for Main and Auxiliary Equipment of Strip Rolling Mill and Research and Development of New Types of Machines, Status Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis Technology for Strip Production Equipment, and Quality Control and Information Technology for Strip Production. In terms of basic theoretical research, engineering technology development and demonstration projects, advanced complete sets of technologies with independent intellectual property rights have been formed. The close, consolidated and effective cooperative relations have been established and formed with large iron and steel enterprises, designing institutes, key manufacturing enterprises, such as Baosteel, Anshansteel, WISCO(Wuhan Iron And Steel Corporation), Shougang, CFHI (China First Heavy Industries), CNEG (China National Erzhong Group Co.), CERI (Capital Engineering & Research Incorporation Limited), etc.

The Beijing Key Laboratory of Metal Lightweight Forming Manufacturing focuses on the major demand for energy conservation and emission reduction in the field of automobile, rail traffic and air transport industry, carries out the research on the science and technology of lightweight forming manufacturing, builds the technological innovation platform from the basic research to the core technology development, continues to provide the innovation theory for lightweight forming manufacturing technology, and provides the important technical support for saving energy and resources and reducing emissions in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and even the whole country. The main research areas are advanced high-strength steel lightweight forming, aluminum magnesium titanium and other light alloy lightweight forming, hollow parts rolling and forming, and metal composite sheet and tube forming and lightweight material manufacturing, etc.
